The Gianni Versace brand, often referred to as just 'Versace', is an Italian fashion company & trade name that was founded by Gianni Versace in 1978. The first ever Versace boutique was opened in Milan's 'Via della Spiga' of that year, (though the Versace family are from Reggio Calabria) & its popularity was immediate. Today, Versace is one of the world's leading international fashion houses. Versace designs, markets & distributes luxury clothing, accessories, makeup & home furnishings, under the various brands of the Versace Group. In 1994, the brand became a household name after the widespread coverage of the Black Versace dress of Elizabeth Hurley (seen below). Tragically, Versace himself was killed in 1997. His sister Donatella, formerly the vice-president of the brand, stepped-in as creative director of Versace, promoting his older brother Santo to the position of CEO. Donatella's daughter Allegra Versace also owns 50 percent of the company since 2004 as wished by Gianni in his last will. Allegra also has the last say of the sale &other important details in the Versace clothing line... Versace's Style Department employs a group of designers and stylists who work in teams. Each team is specifically dedicated to each fashion line or label. These teams operate under the close supervision and guidance of Donatella Versace. Versace has many fans among well-known celebrities. Notable fans of the Versace fashion house are Elizabeth Hurley, Axl Rose & the late Princess Diana, who was offered, but declined, £1,000,000 to appear on the catwalk in Versace to celebrate her divorce from Prince Charles! Jennifer Lopez is known to often Versace on many a red carpet. The infamous, revealing green chiffon dress that she wore at the 42nd Grammy Awards ceremony in 2000, became one of the most widely publicised & talked-about red carpet dresses of the decade. Lady Gaga is known to be a fan of Versace, especially vintage Versace. In her 'The Edge of Glory' music video, she is adorned in Gianni Versace's final collection and in 2011 promised to wear only Versace for 2 months. She cites Gianni and Donnatella Versace as major influences on her. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Versace) This season, Versace was invited by Harrods as one of the top ten most covetable brands to create a special interpretation of one of 10 Disney Princesses animating the store's Christmas project. Cinderella is the Disney princess selected by Versace: the princess is ready for her ball in a stunning contemporary interpretation. My favourite Versace eras to-date has to be the 80s-90s. The contrast of black on gold, particularly the 'Liz Hurley Dress', which recently has made it's comback as a blast-from-the-past & re-vamped by the fabulous Lady Gaga...
